Joy Engelman is a regionally based artist with over 35 years of experience in teaching, practising and exhibiting in the visual arts. With many solo and selected group exhibitions behind her, Joy has received over 20 awards for both her artwork and her commitment to the arts community. She has recently been awarded the Lorenzo il Magnifico Award for Painting (5th Primo), a Medici Medal for Art at the 2007 Florence Biennale, 2007 the highlight of her career to date.

The constant golden thread that has stitched all the various pieces of her life together have been the arts - from painting to writing and philosophy. The burning question being “What else?”

Her work is represented in many overseas and national collections and she is included in several anthologies. Joy has explored new ways of applying paints, various surfaces and techniques, different ideas and subjects…many of these she has passed on through teaching and mentoring over the years.

A lot of her life has been spent of dreaming of flying, seeing the landscape from above, whilst other times she has buried herself in forests. Many plane trips have burned images of the fascinating Australian lanscape into her soul only to emerge in images later.

A focus on Climate Change and how it affects the Australian landscape continues as a theme. Having travelled extensively throughout the desert regions, Engelman is very familiar with the colours, textures and patterns of these areas.
